Why Front-End Resumes Often Choke ATS Parsers
Front-end developers love expressive visual design, but graphical resume flair is often lethal in automated hiring funnels. Platforms like Workday, Greenhouse, and Taleo do not parse your resume through a visual layout engine; they strip raw character glyph streams linearly from the PDF binary.
When candidate resumes use dual-column CSS float layouts or side-by-side table grids, OCR tokenizers frequently read horizontally across columns. A sidebar skill listing such as "TypeScript, React" becomes interleaved with a date range or company title in the right column, corrupting both data points in the recruiter's candidate database. Furthermore, visual skill bars (like "85% React") exist only as drawn vector paths with no semantic Unicode characters, leaving you with zero indexed skill points. Single-column linear streams are designed so that text extraction preserves strict semantic order.
