How to Sign a PDF Online for Free
Signing documents online should be straightforward and private. When you receive an agreement, permission form, or paperwork packet in PDF format, you do not need to print out physical sheets, sign with an ink pen, and scan the pages back into your computer. Instead, you can complete the entire process directly in your browser. The file is processed in your browser, not uploaded to ToolsGrid servers, keeping your personal paperwork on your local machine.
Our in-browser editor provides the essential controls needed to finalize paperwork: you can add a typed or drawn signature, insert text boxes for dates and names, place a whiteout box to hide minor errors visually, and download your completed file as a fresh PDF.

How to sign a PDF
Signing your document requires five straightforward steps in your web browser:
Open the editor and choose your PDF
Launch the PDF Editor. You can open a PDF by choosing it from your file browser or by dragging it into the editor window. The document loads directly into browser memory.
Click Add Signature
Click the Add Signature button on the top toolbar. A modal window opens where you can create your personal signature.
Type or draw your signature and Insert Drawing
Select Type Signature to write your name using a clean script font, or choose Draw with Mouse to sketch your mark by hand. When you finish, click Insert Drawing to load it into placement mode.
Place it on the page and resize or move it
Click the exact location on the document page where your signature belongs. Click and drag the signature box to adjust position, or drag its corner handle to scale its size up or down.
Click Save As PDF
Review your placed items on the document. When everything is set, click the Save As PDF button to compile your additions and download the completed file to your computer.
Typed or drawn signature?
When creating an electronic mark, you can pick between typing your name and drawing it by hand. Each option offers distinct practical characteristics:
- Typed signature: Typing is quick and neat. The editor renders your text in a clean cursive script, ensuring the letters remain sharp and easy to read. If you are using a standard keyboard and desktop setup, typing helps avoid shaky or uneven lines.
- Drawn signature: A drawn signature looks more personal because it reflects your natural handwriting style. However, a mouse is harder to control than a pen, and drawing with one can feel awkward; a laptop touchpad is often smoother. The drawing area in this editor is built for mouse and touchpad input, so if you are on a phone or tablet, use the typed signature option instead.
If you need a standalone transparent image to paste into other documents, you can use our online signature generator to draw or type a transparent PNG signature.
Keep in mind that whether a signature is accepted depends on who asks for it. Different organizations, recipients, and institutions set their own submission guidelines and verification policies for electronic documents.
Fill in details on the same PDF
Most paperwork requires more than just a signature mark. You often need to fill in dates, print your full name, provide contact details, or hide outdated notes:
Add Text
Click Add Text on the toolbar, then click anywhere on the page to place a text element. You can type names, dates, job titles, and other required field values, then reposition the text box precisely over the document line.
Whiteout Box
Click Whiteout Box to place an opaque white block over unwanted page areas. This lets you cover a small mistake visually before saving. However, a whiteout box only covers an area visually; it does not perform secure data redaction or strip hidden metadata from the underlying file.
To speed up your workflow while arranging items, use these built-in editor shortcuts:
- Ctrl+Z: Press Ctrl+Z to undo your previous action and remove an accidental placement.
- Delete: Select any text box, signature, or whiteout shape and press Delete to remove the selected item immediately.
- Esc: Press Esc to cancel placement mode if you change your mind before clicking on the page.
What this tool cannot do
It is helpful to know what the editor is designed for and where its boundaries lie:
- Cannot edit existing text: The tool cannot edit text that already exists inside a PDF. You cannot select, retype, or delete the original font characters or paragraphs that came embedded in the uploaded document. You can only place new annotations on top, or visually block out sections with a whiteout box.
- Visual coverage is not secure redaction: Placing a whiteout box covers an area visually on screen and on printouts, but the underlying text may still remain present in the raw PDF structure. Do not use visual whiteout if you need cryptographic removal of confidential records.
If you need to adjust pages or combine files before or after signing, use our specialized companion tools:
To merge multiple contracts or attachments into one continuous document, use our in-browser PDF Merge utility. If you only need specific pages from a lengthy packet, extract them with PDF Split. For receipts or camera photos that need to become a PDF before signing, convert them with our Image to PDF converter or follow our practical tutorial to convert JPG to PDF.
